Interporto Padova and Liquimet, a Gasfin Group company, have opened Italy’s first public single-fuel liquid methane (LNG) distributor to serve heavy traffic. On the occasion, Iveco delivered 20 Stralis full LNG tractors to Autamarocchi. The LNG does not arrive at the Interporto Padua filling station by road from Marseille or Barcelona, but by intermodal ISO containers by rail from Rotterdam, in line with the principle of reducing the carbon footprint and decongesting road traffic.The station is the first element of GAINN4DEP the Italian initiative for the realisation of a national LNG transport network. The European Commission requires Member States, with the DAFI Directive,transposed by Italy in 2016, to implement a minimum number of LNG refuelling points by 2025 in the main nodes (ports, interports and road nodes) of the Trans-European Transport Network and by 2030 throughout the network.

Sergio Gelain, President of Interporto Padua, said: “The construction of this first public LNG filling station is part of our wider project to create a true advanced centre of sustainable logistics. Since its foundation, Interporto Padova has focused on environmental sustainability, becoming one of the main land terminals for maritime transport, thanks to the rail connections developed with its Intermodal Terminal.
