Interporto Padua and Metrocargo Italia in collaboration with Medlog Transport & Logistics, Rail Hub Europe, manage a traffic of about 12,000 tons of beets transported by intermodal transport from Piedmont to Veneto on a route of about 350 km. Specifically, five trains per week are the alternative to 50 road vehicles. Metrocargo offers the customer a complete ‘door to door’ service, including the supply of swap bodies suitable for transporting this type of goods, first and last mile truck transport, rail transport – between Rivalta Scrivia (Alessandria) and the Padua Freight Village, a connection operated by the operator Medlog Transport & Logistics – as well as punctual monitoring of the transport flow. From the Padua terminal, the swap bodies reach the nearby sugar factory in Pontelongo by road, thus limiting the truck route to a few kilometres. The use of intermodal transport benefits both the regularity of the beet flow to the processing plant and the environment, as it avoids hundreds of kilometres of road journeys between Piedmont and Veneto.
“We are thrilled to have made a decisive contribution to shifting this traffic onto rail, once again giving an example of Metrocargo’s ability to innovate the logistics sector by reconciling the needs of companies with environmental sustainability,” comments Melania Molini, General Manager of Metrocargo Italia.
“Interporto Padua is very pleased with this partnership with Metrocargo Italia and Medlog that allows the use of intermodal transport, which is intrinsically more sustainable than road transport, to be extended to the agricultural sector. Once again, our freight village demonstrates its flexibility and ability to meet the most diverse needs of logistics operators in real time,’ concludes Franco Pasqualetti, President of Interporto Padova.Interporto Padova and Metrocargo Italia in collaboration with Medlog Transport & Logistics, Rail Hub Europe, manage a traffic of about 12,000 tonnes of beets transported by intermodal from Piedmont to Veneto over a distance of about 350 km.
